What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu literally translates to mean ‘finger pressure’. It is a holistic healing therapy originating in Japan in which pressure is applied to points and areas of the body with the fingers, thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows, knees or feet. It is based on the ancient teachings of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Traditional Chinese Medicine teaches that vital energy (Qi) flows through the body via a network of channels known as meridians. Each meridian connects with an internal organ. Health is reliant on the balance and free flow of Qi through these meridian-organ complexes. If the flow of Qi becomes blocked, pain or illness will result.

Shiatsu aims to access these meridians through pressure points and other techniques to promote this flow of energy and support the body and its innate ability to heal itself.
